NBA Star Deposed For About 5 Hours
May 11, 2005 -- WASHINGTON -- Philadelphia 76ers star Allen Iverson was in Washington on Wednesday to answer questions about a civil lawsuit that stems from a nightclub brawl last year in the District.
The multimillion-dollar lawsuit was filed after an altercation in July at the eyebar club in Northwest Washington.
Iverson arrived at noon Wednesday and was deposed for nearly five hours.
Iverson initially fought the deposition, saying that his celebrity status and the inconvenience of traveling to Washington made it difficult, but he was finally forced to show up and tell what he knows.
Iverson was in town last July following a sporting event involving some of his friends. He went to the eyebar, and when he and his entourage wanted to be seated, other members of the club were told to move to another section of the bar.
They allegedly refused, and a fight broke out.
Two members of the eyebar security staff were injured and two club patrons were also hurt.
"These men were basically beaten by Mr. Iverson's security detail," attorney Gregory Lattimer said. "The lawsuit that we filed alleges just that. In fact, (one of the alleged victims) suffered a ruptured eardrum and head injuries that were unbelievable."
The plaintiffs' attorney said Iverson was involved in the alleged assault.
"We absolutely do (think he was involved)," Lattimer said. "We certainly allege that in the lawsuit, and we believe that the facts will prove that out that Mr. Iverson was involved."
The civil suit is in the discovery phase. It is not expected to go to trial until later this year.
