When Allen Iverson was drafted by the 76ers in the summer of 1996, the NBA was a much different league. Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls had just won their fourth out of six championships in the nineties, Shaquille ONeal was considered by many to be the third best Center in the league, behind David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon, and Anfernee (Penny) Hardaway was an All-NBA First Team selection. Now, nine years later, Hardaway has been reduced to a bench role because of injuries, Olajuwon and Robinson have both retired, and Jordan retired for the second time, then came back, and then retired for the third time. Yet, one of the few things that have been constants over the past nine years has been the sight of Allen Iverson in a Philadelphia 76ers uniform.
Iverson has now started his tenth season with the Sixers. Only three other active players in the NBA have stayed with the same team as long as Iverson has, Minnesotas Kevin Garnett is in his 11th season, while Kobe Bryant and Zydrunas Ilgauskas are in their tenth seasons.
After nine seasons, A.I. had quite a few accomplishments to list on his NBA resume. He was the rookie of the year in 1996-97, He held a career 27.4-point per game scoring average (3rd all-time), he had 16,738 total points (4th among active players), he was the MVP of the 2000-01 regular season, he was the MVP of the All-Star Game in 2001 and in 2005, hes been voted to the All-NBA first team three times (1999, 2001, 2005), he holds three scoring titles, and he led the Sixers to a NBA finals appearance in 2001. Even after all that, Iverson shows no signs of slowing down.
Throughout the 2005-06 season, the Sixers will join NBA.com and Reebok in paying tribute to the toughest little man the league has ever seen. At the conclusion of every month, Sixers.com will post a comparison of all 10 of those months that Iverson has played throughout his career. After taking a look at Iversons performance in each month, you, the fan, will get to vote and decide in which year Iverson performed best in the month of November, December, January, etc. Then, at the conclusion of the season, as well as the conclusion of one decade of A.I., you will be able to vote on which overall season was Iversons most successful.
As Iverson has now concluded his 10th November in the NBA, you can get started and begin the voting.
