NEW YORK (Ticker) - Snubbed by Team USA, Allen Iverson celebrated his third NBA Player of the Week award of the season on Monday.
The four-time scoring champion of the Philadelphia 76ers averaged a league-high 37.3 points on 56 percent shooting and 9.3 assists in four games to earn Eastern Conference honors.
The award comes one day after Iverson learned he will not have a chance to compete for a spot on the United States team that will play in the 2006 FIBA World Championships and 2008 Olympics.
Iverson was the leading scorer on the 2004 Olympic team that won a disappointing bronze medal. He clearly was proud of representing the U.S. and wanted to do it again, but the selection committee opted for a contingent of floor generals that included All-Star Chauncey Billups of Detroit, second-year guard Luke Ridnour of Seattle and rookie Chris Paul of New Orleans.
For the first time in his 10-year NBA career, Iverson recorded 40 points and 10 assists in back-to-back contests, becoming the first player to achieve that since Denver's Michael Adams in 1991.
He collected 40 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in a 106-101 win over Houston last Wednesday and followed with 47 points on 17-of-28 shooting and 12 rebounds in a 119-113 victory over Washington on Friday.
Iverson finished the week with 33 points, nine assists and three steals in a 94-93 loss to Indiana on Sunday.
Forward Pau Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies was named Western Conference Player of the Week.
Gasol averaged 26.3 points on 64 percent shooting along with 7.7 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 2.3 blocks in leading the Grizzlies to three wins. He scored a career-high 39 points on 16-of-22 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 108-98 win over Washington last Monday.
Guard Dwyane Wade of Miami and forwards LeBron James of Cleveland and Stephen Jackson of Indiana also were candidates for the Eastern Conference award.
Guards Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Steve Nash of Phoenix and Jason Richardson of Golden State and forward Kevin Garnett of Minnesota were nominees for the West honor.
