Last charges against Iverson to be dropped
Inquirer Staff and Wire Report
[Prosecutors will move to dismiss charges against 76ers star Allen Iverson.]

Prosecutors will move to dismiss charges against 76ers star Allen Iverson.

Prosecutors will seek to dismiss the remaining charges against 76ers star Allen Iverson because the two men who had accused him of threatening them with a gun have decided they no longer want to participate in the case, District Attorney Lynne Abraham said late today.

Iverson had been accused of barging into Shaun Bowman's apartment on July 3 while looking for his wife. There, he allegedly threatened Charles Jones and Jones' friend Hakim Carey, the men said.

But Jones and Carey fell apart on the witness stand at a subsequent hearing and four felony charges and eight of 10 misdemeanor charges against Iverson were tossed out by a judge July 29.

The two remaining misdemeanor charges will now be dropped, because Jones and Carey didn't want to pursue the case, Abraham said.

Abraham said her office had the power to subpoena Carey and Jones and compel them to testify, but decided that it would be a waste of resources.

?I don?t think the taxpayers want to spend that kind of money on this kind of case,? she said.

She said the motion to dismiss will be made at a scheduled hearing before Judge Seamus McCaffrey on Wednesday.

Gregory Iverson, the player?s uncle who faced the same charges, also will not be prosecuted, Abraham said.

In a statement released this evening by his attorneys, Iverson said: "I want to sincerely thank Lynne Abraham for having the courage to do the right thing and not be caught up in the media frenzy that accompanied these false accusations against me."

"Until now, on the advice of my lawyers, I have not said anything about the case< the written statemetn coninues, "Now that my lawyers have no longer restricted me, I want to make it absolutely clear that ?1. I did not have a gun or any weapon whatsoever;

?2. I did not terrorize or threaten anyone;

?3. I did not force my way into my cousin?s apartment.

Iverson went on to thank fans, family and teammates for their support and said he now considered "this a closed chapter in my life and will not discuss it further."

The 76ers released a short statement saying the organization was ?gratified? by the decision.

?From the beginning, we urged our fans, the press and the public not to immediately react, but to allow the matter to be processed by the judicial system,? the team said. ?We are obviously very pleased with the result for Allen, for his family, and for the 76ers and our fans. We look forward to returning our focus to where it now belongs ? on the basketball court.?

Iverson, the city?s highest-profile sports celebrity, was the subject of intense local media scrutiny when the allegations first surfaced in early July. Hordes of reporters and photographers camped outside his Main Line mansion in the days before he turned himself in to face the charges on July 16.

Iverson, who in led the 76ers to the NBA Finals and was named the league?s MVP in 2001, remains enormously popular. His 76ers jersey is the among the league?s top sellers, and Reebok last year gave Iverson a lifetime extension of his 10-year, $50 million endorsement contract.
