Group will boycott law enforcement night in protest

PHILADELPHIA -- A group of police offers in Philadelphia is refusing to buy tickets for the annual Sixers law enforcement night to protest comments made by guard Allen Iverson.

The group of police, from the 8th District in Northeast Philadelphia, were angered with Iverson's statement that he fears police in the city, according to Wednesday's Philadelphia Inquirer. The game is Jan. 8 vs. Detroit.

"I'm a Sixers fan and I hate to see him make comments about crooked cops," Robert Eddis, the president of the Fraternal Order of Police, told the Inquirer. "Whether he likes it or not, he's an example to the young kids."

In an interview with two Philadelphia writers last month, Iverson said: "I've heard about police officers toasting to Allen Iverson's next felony conviction. I'm hearing about them saying I'm involved with one thing or another, and it scares me."

He also said, "I know that if there's a crooked cop out there, they could do anything to me. He could do anything. Allen Iverson could wind up dead tomorrow if a crooked cop wants him dead. It's as simple as that.

"I want to be in Philadelphia, but I'm scared to be here."

A Sixers spokeswoman told the newspaper that she wasn't aware of any organized protest. She also said that one police officer had sent a letter saying he wouldn't attend.

"I've talked to Allen since then and he didn't mean to make a sweeping generalization about police in Philadelphia," the spokeswoman, Karen Frascona, told the Inquirer.

Girl I read that BS yesterday and ignored it people now a day take things way to far. I mean it aint like he said every cop in Philadelphia after me and I can't stand neither one of them SOB's. Then I would understand them trying to boycot something but it's not like he said it directly towards anyone and those that are trying to protest are probably the crooked cops he talking about.

Allen Iverson Statement Concerning His Recent Interview

Id like to clear up a misconception that resulted from of an interview that my wife Tawanna and I recently conducted. I think that its important to understand that during this interview, we spoke for nearly two hours. The portions of our conversation relating to some individual members of the police force were very brief and occurred near the end of our conversation.

I understand that police officers have very difficult jobs. And I believe that the majority of police officers are very professional and caring individuals. Unfortunately, its not clear that my feelings were directed at just a very few individuals.

Last summer I was falsely accused of several serious offenses. While investigating the case, and before any hearing, my lawyers learned of an incident, where several police officers publicly celebrated my arrest and toasted me being convicted. I was extremely disturbed by this behavior and I believe that that these kinds of actions should be troubling to all law abiding citizens and especially to the many honest and hard working police officers.

Im sorry if anyone felt that my comments were directed at all police officers. That was not my intent. I was concerned by the actions of these few individuals. And I think that most people, in a similar situation, would react the same way. Id like to make it clear that I respect police officers and appreciate the job that they do. I hope that this information clears up any misunderstanding that may have existed.
