I was a Nugs fan. Operative words is *was*. Until this trade.

AI is enormously talented. He is also an enormous distraction. He lacks leadership skills. And he is not a winner. He is a helluva a player. But he is no leader, and no winner.

Mark my words... this will not take long for the dynamics of things to expose themselves in Denver. All that talk about instant championship contenders is micky mouse. It will fizzle, watch. Karl stated recently that he was working to teach the young Nugs team how to win. To do that you need leadership, and a winning core. Whatever Denver had will get distracted by AI because he is not a leader, and not a winner. He is an endorsement. He is a player. He is a lot of things. But a leader, no. And that will would conter in Denver. You will never see them extend into any playoffs because of this.

Why is this so obvious? Look at how AI handled himself, especially being named captain, of the Olympic team. I knew the instand that happened, they would not win. And they didn't. This is so obvious how this will go, it is sad. But with the greater distraction, what little leadership they had going will get distorted. Michael Jordan was a leader. Larry Bird was a leader. Magic was a leader. They and many more were leaders, and players. AI, is a player. That's it. He's already shooting his mouth off to promote the Melo/AI connection. Management is giddy because they will sell tickets. The 76er management is giddy because they got rid of him. Karl I bet is seething privately because he sees a huge distraction in the making.

Hate to break it to the Nugs fans, but this will be a slow train wreck.

They may go into the playoffs, this year, next year, whatever, but they will never win any championship. That ultimately takes leadership at the coaching and player level. What happened at the Olympics could not be a better foreshadowing of this than anything... Nugs fans should start getting used to the phrase "what till next year..."

well who cares about ur opinion? AI stated on his recent interviews that he's gonna make it work for the team and prove all the haters out there (YOU) that AI-Melo team will work out fine. Are you a fortune teller or something? well mark ur fortune cards goodbye because AI will prove you that he's the man!

Well, who cares about YOUR opinion? I care about mine, because I am and will be right. Yes, I am a fortune teller. But this is a no brainer. Look at what happened in the Olympics. Check your history.

By the way, I am not an AI hater. I am stating the obvious. Again, check your history. I don't care what anyone says today, I look at the past. As the saying goes, if the past is any indication of the future... and it usually is, this is predictable. Hey, I REALLY wanted my Olympic team to win. Hey, I really want the Denver Nugs to win. Hey, I want these people to be successful. I have far greater interest in seeing people play fair, play well, play hard, play to win. I am just recounting history. Hate AI? Not at all. I never professed hatred towards any part of this. I am just stating history.

And it is yet again amazing to me that the key elements in this are always glossed over. It takes a lot of things to win championships. The penultimate characteristics are a winning comportment, and leadership. I have yet to see anyone talk about leadership. Without that, you might go deep, but name one professional team that has won their ultimate championship without identifiable leadership?? Now, tell me who the leadership will be on the Denver Nuggets? It is not AI, because he is NOT a leader. Never has been, and at this stage, never will be. Say it ain't so, but study your history. AI is a stellar player, absolutely. Leader, no. So, who has that role in this Nuggets mix? Got the point? It is so flamin' obvious I can't believe I have to explain it to anyone.

Wanting to win is not enough. Study your last Olympic games. Better, for an easy read, look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Iverson A simple bio. You see, leadership is something that is forged over time. Michael Jordan came from Dean Smith's great winning tradition at UNC. Jordan learned over 4 years how to win, and how to be a leader. These characteristics, and you can track them in the great ones, are forged over time. AI has a remarkably checkered background (if you think this does not matter, you are dreaming), only stayed at Georgetown for two years, has had nothing but a contentious career with his coaches and teammates, did not have the backbone to play on the Olympic Team and the results became predictable (with that talent, that team could have beaten Alien, but they barely scraped together a bronze). There is nothing in AI's history that shows this will work. He wins INDIVIDUAL things. No where in his history has he won anything as a team except in high school football. What has has done is gotton into a lot of legal trouble. Most people tend to frown on stuff like that. But when you add it all up, hey, don't take my word for it... this is his reputation. If ANYWHERE in his background there was a team success, in high school, in college, in the pros, in the Olympics, then it would at least up the anty a bit. But the older he got, the less it was about team. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Negatory. It will sure as hell sell tickets. I'd love to see him play. But do I see this chemistry leading towards grandeur? No, because it lacks the core need, and it is called leadership.

As far as Melo and the rest of the teammates go, this hopefully will be be a decent learning experience that will help their careers as players and leaders down the road.

Now, having said all that... if someone with remarkable backbone, a winner, a leader, got right up into AI's face 24x7 and TAUGHT him every second what it takes to be a leader, then it might have a better chance. But one does not snap their fingers, go on ESPN and say it will work. It doesn't work like that. You may say who cares what I have to say... no one should. But watch... I will be proven correct.

It is called leadership. No one talks about it because in this remarkably shortsighted and spoiled society, people think things are somehow magically handed to them. It doesn't work like that. At least the Nugs may be fun to watch. But the disappointment is inevitable.
